Maintaining vibrant, youthful and healthy looking skin is a goal of most women as they age. If you are like me, you want to do this without using intense chemicals and spending a small fortune. Which raises the question: is it possible to do this using natural beauty products? I certainly believe so. Is it also possible to do this without spending a fortune on exotic, natural products? Once again, I say yes!
How to Select Natural Beauty Products
How do you know which products are really green versus those with green marketing? What about the companies that produce them. Do they believe in green products or are they just trying to boost sales by meeting market trends? Most importantly, will the product work as well or better than its chemical counterpart? I use the following prioritization and research plan when choosing my products:
1) natural, organic, cruelty free product
First, I sort to make sure I’m only looking at products that are cruelty free and at least 90% natural. Companies like Yes To and Burt’s Bees tell you exactly how much of the product is natural. I really appreciate the honest marketing.
You do not need to spend a fortune to find a natural beauty product that works! Cost is very important to me. I have a dream to retire early and I love to travel, so it is very important to me to reduce my monthly bills and save as much as possible. Now that I am close to going out on unpaid maternity leave, and hoping to stay out with my little girl as long as possible, saving money is even more of a priority.
3) customer reviews
I always check out the product reviews and look for those that describe themselves as having a similar skin type to mine. That being said, I take them with a grain of salt since the majority of reviews are those who love or hate the product. Not to mention everyone has different skin, so the same product can be great for me and terrible for you.
4) trustworthy, local company
I try to buy local when possible. Possible, here meaning, that it exists and is also affordable. I like to research the company to learn if it is dedicated to sustainable, green products and morals or just good at green marketing. Things to look for: Read the About Us section…how do they describe themselves? Are they a B Corp? What is their vision, mission? Do they have a Corporate Social Responsibility Plan? Does the company look at the bottom line (profit) or the triple bottom line (people, planet, profit)? Do they donate back to the community? How do they mitigate the environmental impacts of their packaging and manufacturing?
Research Takes Time
It’s true that all this research takes time and time is a precious commodity. This is where blogs like this one come in handy. Let someone else do the research, so all you have to do is decide if it sounds like the right product for you! Please feel free to ask me any questions about the products I mention in my posts to help determine if it is right for you.
What did I miss? What do you look at when choosing your natural beauty products?
