Normal Routine versus Newborn Routine

Is there such thing as a normal newborn routine? Will I be able to establish a normal routine again once the baby comes and before returning to work?

This has been a crazy week. Between the election and a slew of baby prep classes at Kaiser, we have arrived home late and slept very little this week. This follows a month of dealing with family issues preceded by a vacation. As a result, it has been almost two months since we’ve been able to live by our normal routine. This morning I found myself thinking: I just want to go back to my normal routine.

I miss waking up at 5:30, going to the gym, coming home and eating breakfast, getting ready for work and arriving to work about the same time every day. I miss scheduled lunches with friends and colleagues. Having time to cook dinner in the evenings and take the dog on a walk.

As I was mourning my normal routine and dreaming of having time to work out and eat healthy, I had an epiphany. My baby is due in little over a month and that will change everything! Goodbye regular routine, can I hope to establish a newborn routine that includes taking care of myself? I don’t want to sound selfish but I really want to be healthy and get back into shape after the baby arrives.

I may never have a normal routine again

If there is anything I’ve learned from the newborn care and childbirth prep classes that I took this week, it’s that I can expect to get no more than 1-3 hours of sleep at a time for the first few months after baby comes. That I will have to take naps during the day when my baby does so that I can try to avoid maternal exhaustion. Naps are something I’ve never been able to do. I don’t know how I will fit in a workout that includes more than walking the baby and dog.

What is your newborn routine?

Now I know that the first few weeks are most likely the craziest time. And that things should settle down a little after that. So I’m curious, can you establish a newborn routine that allows you to get in a workout routine and feel some semblance of normalcy? Mom’s out there please let me know your experiences.
