Ultimate Pregnancy Protein Shake

This ultimate pregnancy protein shake has become my morning staple before heading out the door for work. Now that I am on maternity leave at almost 37 weeks pregnant, I still have this shake in the morning before or after my work out.

I love this protein shake because it helps solve three problems for me: 

  1. Stretch Marks

    How does this help with stretch marks? My awesome protein shake contains Great Lakes Gelatin. The Great Lakes Gelatin is made of Hydrolyzed Collagen Protein. It is the same Collagen found naturally in bones skin and cartilage. It is easily assimilated  by the body and helps to repair connective tissue (bone, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, skin, hair and nails). In other words it is great for helping skin refresh and repair to avoid stretch marks. It is recommended to take two rounded tablespoons per day so I add those to my protein smoothie.

  2. Morning Sickness

    As I mentioned, I am in my 37th week of pregnancy and the morning sickness has still not gone away. I thought I was past it at about 6 months when I felt some relief for almost a month. Unfortunately when my mom got very sick in September, the stress brought the nausea back and I have not recovered since. Needless to say every morning is still a struggle to get ready and out the door without vomiting. To attempt to curb the nausea, I eat something as soon as I wake up: cereal, toast with butter & jam, bagel. Then I go work out or go get ready. In just about the time that it takes to do either of those things, I start to feel nausea again and that’s when I typically have my protein shake. The protein and fruit instantly curb the nausea and, best of all, makes me feel like I had something nutritious.

  3. Protein for Workout Prep/Recovery

    I’m not imparting any great secret here by stating that protein consumption is encouraged before and after a workout. According to Natural Balance Foods, it helps to repair any internal or external damage, supports the immune system and contributes to an overall feeling of wellbeing. Maintaining my health in pregnancy has been very important to me. It has also been very difficult considering the constant nausea – all day sickness not morning sickness! – and fatigue. Nevertheless I have done my best to stick to a regular work out routine even though my exercise activity is heavily modified. The protein really helps to give my body the fuel and strength it needs to build and maintain muscle and a healthy weight.

Ingredients

Optional: Chia seeds, flax, and whatever makes you happy!

Directions

I add the banana and 1/2 pack of acai first.

Then I add the berries and cranberry juice.

I add the protein and gelatin next (I found that if I add them before the liquid they stick to the bottom/sides and don’t blend in smoothly.

Lastly, I add water to the top of the ingredients so it will blend to the consistency that I like.

That’s it! Super easy and quick. I have a Ninja blender that comes with three smoothie cups so I can blend right into the cup and go. Check it out below. I got it this Ninja at Costco but it’s actually cheaper on Amazon. I LOVE it! I hardly ever use the mixer so the I linked to both below so you can save even more money if you also wouldn’t use it.
